98% of Windows PCs have at least one flaw unpatched
Secunia is a well known website dedicated to security. It includes an inventory of particular vulnerabilities of software and operating systems of all backgrounds. Since recently, Secunia is also known for its application that analyzes and PSI detects security vulnerabilities presented on your machine. The company now communicates some figures on the state machine guarding analyzed.
The Personal Software Inspector
PSI for Personal Software Inspector is a software for Windows that comes in the form:
recently released version 1.0, it was downloaded and installed by a large number of people, and Secunia has used data gathered to take stock of the correction of faults and compare it to the previous year. When the application starts, it actually scans your entire Windows system and all installed software. If deficiencies not "patched" are detected, the final grade given percentage decreases. A score of 100% is therefore no known exploit was detected. For
Secunia, security has deteriorated
In terms of security, the base is not even an antivirus or firewall. The first reaction has always been updating software, and the first operating system. Do not follow by example monthly bulletins from Microsoft is a danger, because a critical vulnerability left open can allow the spread of a worm. Secunia has produced statistics on users who have one or more applications at risk. By "at risk" means that a new version of an application are correct and that at least one flaw, but it has not been installed.
Here are the numbers that Secunia was given in 2007: * No application
risk: 4.54%
* From 0 to 5 applications at risk: 27.83% *
6 to 10 applications at risk: 25.69 * 11%
applications at risk and over: 41.94%
It was already important to note that the proportion of users having at least 11 applications at risk of dangerously approaching half last year. Has the situation improved in the last year? Unfortunately not, and instead: * No application
risk: 1.91%
* From 0 to 5 applications at risk: 30.27% *
6 to 10 applications at risk: 25.07% * 11
applications at risk and over: 45.76%
In short: more than 98% of Windows PCs tested have at least one flaw unpatched. These figures were obtained from a panel of 20 000 machines that used the PSI application. The numbers have gotten worse, but they are not necessarily representative of the actual state of the global fleet, because it is necessarily worse.
Secunia is the first to indicate that the figures provided by PSI can not be taken for granted. Not because they are controversial, but we must take into account the context: people who use PSI Secunia are those who know and have therefore more likely to be made on the safety than others. We find the same type of context is crucial if indicates that the market share of Firefox 3 on PC INpact exceeds 50%: Explicit and therefore unrepresentative of the global situation.
Secunia reminds that it is essential to update its system and its applications. For the latter, or nearly all versions have an integrated system that is better not to disable. If you do not know the status of your software, please install PSI and initiate a scan. The software installs quickly (500 KB) and, although English is very simple to understand. Source
